Peru's Fujimori Leads by 1,500 Votes in Presidential Runoff

(MENAFN) Peru's presidential runoff remained unresolved Friday, with conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori clinging to a razor-thin advantage over leftist challenger Roberto Sanchez as 98.3% of ballots were counted and tensions escalated in the capital.

Figures from the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) showed Fujimori, of the conservative Popular Force party, holding 50.010% of the vote against Sanchez's 49.990% for the leftist Together for Peru coalition — a gap of approximately 1,500 votes. The Special Electoral Jury is assessing over 1,500 flagged tally sheets as the count moves toward final certification.

Sanchez called on Fujimori to agree to a joint ballot review at a Lima news conference, citing alleged counting irregularities.

"Transparency, respect for the popular vote, democracy, zero controversy – that means revealing actions where we believe and suspect, with evidence, that something is amiss," Sanchez said. "I propose that we jointly request, within the framework of due process, the institutional integrity of the electoral process, international observers, and that we conduct a thorough review and a recount."

Both candidates retain the right to challenge the outcome through Peru's electoral tribunal, though authorities have found no evidence of widespread fraud. Amid the uncertainty, a pro-Sanchez rally dubbed "The taking of Lima" was convened Friday to press for transparency in the final stages of counting. Both candidates called on supporters to demonstrate peacefully.

"In our country, citizens have the right to march, to express their differing opinions. Everything is guaranteed, but this must be within the framework of the law, the Constitution, and with respect for other citizens," Fujimori said.
