Trump Launches Federal Website Promising “World’s Lowest” Drug Prices
Speaking at the White House, Trump said that starting Thursday, dozens of widely used prescription drugs would be offered at “dramatic discounts” through TrumpRx.gov.
The initiative adopts a “most-favored-nation” pricing model, ensuring that the US pays no more than the lowest price charged for the same drug in any other country. “We’re taking the lowest price paid for drugs, and we will pay equal to whatever the lowest price anywhere in the world,” Trump said, describing the plan as a “tremendous reduction” for consumers.
He noted that the pricing strategy may push up costs in other countries, adding, “Drug prices in other nations will go up by doing this, they had to agree. And the reason they agreed is I used tariffs. I said, ‘If you don't put them up, then we're going to put tariffs on your nation, which will be more expensive to you.’”
Trump specifically highlighted steep price reductions for popular weight-loss medications known as GLP-1 drugs, citing Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic as an example.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), also addressed the event, emphasizing that the program aims to shield vulnerable Americans from unaffordable prescription costs.
