Trump Assassination Plot Draws Life Term

(MENAFN) A federal judge sentenced a would-be presidential assassin to life imprisonment Wednesday after he orchestrated a calculated ambush targeting Donald Trump at a Florida golf facility during the 2024 campaign season.

Ryan Routh, now convicted on five federal counts including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assault on a federal officer, learned his fate in a courtroom presided over by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon. The life sentence comes with a mandatory seven-year enhancement for firearms violations.

"It's clear to me that you engaged in a premeditated, calculated plot to take a human life," Cannon said.

Last September, a jury found Routh guilty following the September 15, 2024 incident at Trump's West Palm Beach golf property. A Secret Service agent discovered a rifle barrel protruding from nearby vegetation several hundred yards from where the then-presidential candidate was playing. Routh immediately fled but authorities apprehended him shortly thereafter.

In legal filings, Routh maintained his innocence, insisting no criminal act transpired since he never discharged the weapon at Trump.

The golf course incident marked the second assassination attempt against Trump within a two-month span. Just weeks earlier, a gunman's bullet had grazed Trump's ear during a Butler, Pennsylvania campaign rally. Both attacks unfolded as Trump campaigned to reclaim the presidency from Democrat Joe Biden, who had defeated him four years prior. Trump ultimately secured victory in November 2024.
