Trump Withholds Plans for Dealing with Iran

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has declared he will withhold military strategy details regarding Iran from even America's closest regional partners. Yet despite Washington's escalating military posture toward Tehran, both governments suggest diplomatic channels remain active.

Recent weeks have seen the US deploy what Trump characterized as a "massive" and "beautiful armada" to the region, spearheaded by aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, designed to compel Tehran into negotiating a fresh nuclear agreement.

When Fox News asked Saturday whether he had briefed Washington's Persian Gulf allies on potential US military operations, Trump explained that divulging specifics could sabotage peaceful resolution prospects.

"Well, we can't tell them the plan. If I told them the plan, it would be almost as bad as telling you the plan – it could be worse, actually," Trump said. "But look, the plan is that [Iran is] talking to us, and we'll see if we can do something; otherwise, we'll see what happens."

Tehran has likewise indicated negotiations with Washington remain viable. Iran's Supreme National Security Council chief, Ali Larijani, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin one day earlier, stated that advancement toward talks was underway.

"Contrary to the hype of the contrived media war, structural arrangements for negotiations are progressing," Larijani said.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has adopted a measured approach balancing caution with firmness, stating Tehran seeks no confrontation with the United States and contending that armed conflict would serve neither nation.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has never sought, and in no way seeks, war, and it is firmly convinced that a war would be in the interest of neither Iran, nor the United States, nor the region," Pezeshkian said.

Trump has consistently expressed preference for diplomatic resolution but cautioned that any forthcoming assault on Iran would prove "far worse" than prior strikes. Media outlets cite administration officials indicating Trump is weighing options spanning attacks on Iranian security apparatus and nuclear facilities to targeting government officials, aiming to reignite anti-regime demonstrations.

Tehran has portrayed the civil unrest—which erupted over economic complaints in late December and devolved into fatal violence—as foreign-orchestrated insurrection, claiming external operatives armed demonstrators to provoke severe government crackdowns and legitimize American military action.
