Russia Says No Immediate Path to DR Congo-Rwanda Peace

(MENAFN) Moscow would embrace rapid conclusion of hostilities between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and Rwanda, yet perceives no immediate settlement pathway, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared.

Addressing media during a Tuesday press briefing, Lavrov stated Moscow maintains positive diplomatic ties with both nations and desires conflict termination, though conceded that "there are no prospects for a resolution" currently.

"There are serious, deep-seated causes, and without addressing them, it will be impossible to simply declare, 'well, we've reached an agreement, and everything is fine," he explained.

The minister noted Russia stands prepared to assume a constructive position if solicited, observing that should mediation or support requests arrive, Moscow "will, of course, see what we can do in this situation."

Diplomatic relations between Rwanda and DR Congo continue deteriorating.

The volatile security climate additionally obstructs humanitarian operations. During January, a landslide caused by intense precipitation devastated the village of Burutsi in North Kivu, claiming numerous civilian lives. Regional authorities indicated central government aid requests encountered obstacles from compromised infrastructure and limited entry since adjacent zones remain controlled by M23 militants.

During the identical conference addressing Russian diplomatic achievements in 2025, Lavrov also highlighted expansive political transformations across the continent, characterizing Africa as experiencing what he termed a "second awakening."

This marks another instance where Lavrov has underscored that African states increasingly recognize former colonial authorities perpetuate influence through neocolonial methodologies, triggering relationship reevaluation.
