Trump says Washington to deter supposed Russian threat to Greenland
Trump wrote on Truth Social, “NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that ‘you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.’ Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!” His statement came after a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who confirmed that he discussed the security situation in Greenland and the Arctic with Trump and said the two would continue working on the issue.
Last week, Trump announced 10% tariffs on eight European NATO nations—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland—for opposing his plan to acquire Greenland and for sending small military contingents to the island. He stated that the tariffs, effective February 1, would rise to 25% in June until a “complete and total purchase” is achieved.
European leaders have strongly rejected the move, labeling it “blackmail” and a violation of sovereignty. In a joint statement, the eight targeted countries called the tariff threats an attempt to “undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral.” The EU is preparing a retaliatory trade package and affirmed “full solidarity” with Denmark.
Trump has framed Greenland’s acquisition—an island of 2.17 million square kilometers with a population of about 57,000—as a strategic national security measure to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. Officials in Copenhagen, Beijing, and Moscow have dismissed this claim as unfounded. Russia, with a substantial Arctic presence but thousands of kilometers from Greenland, has called Trump’s plans “extraordinary” while reaffirming that the island belongs to Denmark. Moscow also criticized NATO’s growing militarization of the Arctic, warning that actions disregarding Russian interests could produce “negative consequences.”
