Elon Musk’s child’s mother files lawsuit over Grok AI deepfake images
Ashley St. Clair filed a case in New York’s Supreme Court against xAI, alleging that Grok — the AI system integrated into the US social media platform X — continued producing explicit content despite assurances that such behavior would be halted, as stated by reports. She is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, claiming the technology generated dozens of sexually explicit and degrading deepfake images featuring her likeness.
The legal action follows weeks of public backlash over the creation of sexualized images involving women and children. In response to criticism, the company announced it would "geoblock" Grok from producing images of real people in bikinis or underwear in jurisdictions where such content is deemed illegal.
St. Clair, 27, is a political influencer and author who shares a son with Musk, born in 2024. Reports note that the two are no longer in a relationship.
According to the lawsuit, X “financially benefited from the creation and dissemination of nonconsensual, realistic, sexualised deepfake content depicting Plaintiff as a minor and adult” and therefore xAI is "directly liable for the harassment and explicit images" generated by Grok.
“This harm flowed directly from deliberate design choices that enabled Grok to be used as a tool of harassment and humiliation. Companies should not be able to escape responsibility when the products they build predictably cause this kind of harm. We intend to hold Grok accountable and to help establish clear legal boundaries for the entire public’s benefit to prevent AI from being weaponised for abuse,” St. Clair’s legal representative, Carrie Goldberg, said, according to reports.
