Explosion in Kharkiv high-rise kills at least two people

(MENAFN) At least two people die and several others sustain injuries after an explosion hits a high-rise building in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, as stated by reports.

Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov confirmed that the blast occurred in a residential neighborhood. “As a result of an explosion of unknown origin, we have dead and injured people in a high-rise building in the Saltivskyi district,” he said on Telegram. Initial accounts suggested a single fatality, but officials later confirmed the recovery of a second body.

Emergency teams are carrying out search and rescue operations while authorities work to determine the cause of the explosion and assess the full impact.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, lies roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Russian border and has faced repeated attacks since the start of the war in February 2022. The Saltivskyi district, a densely populated area, has previously experienced heavy damage to its infrastructure during the ongoing conflict.
