Zelensky demands harsher pressure on Moscow
Zelenskyy provided the senators with an update on the situation at the front, particularly around Pokrovsk, noting that October marked Russia’s highest troop losses since the start of the full-scale invasion. Despite this, he said, Moscow continues to reinforce its military presence even as morale among its forces declines.
“On behalf of all Ukrainians, we are thankful for your bipartisan support … We are thankful to President (Donald) Trump for several initiatives that we will discuss today,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader pressed lawmakers to back measures allowing the use of frozen Russian assets and to impose “secondary sanctions,” especially those targeting Russia’s energy sector. He also reiterated Ukraine’s need for long-range weapons, such as Tomahawk missiles, and more comprehensive air defense protection.
Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal emphasized their ongoing efforts to advance legislation introducing tougher sanctions and labeling Russia “a state sponsor of terrorism” if abducted Ukrainian children are not returned.
Lawmakers highlighted the personal involvement of US First Lady Melania Trump in advocating for the return of those children, with Zelenskyy noting that Ukrainian families had sent her a letter expressing their gratitude.
The discussion, which reaffirmed cross-party US backing for Ukraine, included Senators Lindsey Graham, Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, Amy Klobuchar, Sheldon Whitehouse, Michael Bennet, Adam Schiff, and Richard Durbin.
