Trump, Xi to meet in China for trade talks
Describing the call as “very good” on his social media platform, Trump said the conversation revolved “almost entirely” around trade matters. He noted that Xi “graciously invited” him to China, and in response, he offered a reciprocal invitation.
“As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing,” Trump wrote, highlighting the significance of the potential visit in fostering bilateral engagement.
This call was the first direct communication between the two leaders since Trump returned to the office, and it appeared to be an effort to calm hostilities following a renewed round of economic disputes earlier this year.
Tensions intensified on April 2 when the US introduced sweeping tariffs on imports from over 90 countries, including China, citing persistent trade imbalances. In response, China imposed retaliatory tariffs, prompting Washington to further escalate duties on Chinese products to 145%. Beijing followed with its own countermeasures, pushing tariffs on American goods up to 125%.
The recent exchange between Trump and Xi suggests a possible thaw in diplomatic relations, though it remains to be seen whether either side will make meaningful concessions in the ongoing trade standoff.
