Strong Earthquake Rattles Russia’s Kamchatka
According to a Telegram post from the regional branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the undersea quake originated in the Pacific Ocean at a shallow depth of just 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).
The quake's epicenter was pinpointed 161 kilometers (100 miles) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative hub of Kamchatka.
This major seismic event was preceded by two earlier tremors registering magnitudes of 5.5 and 6.7. It was then followed by two additional quakes, measured at magnitudes 6.7 and 6.3, intensifying seismic activity in the region.
The Emergency Situations Ministry issued a tsunami warning for several areas: the Aleutsky and Ust-Kamchatsky municipal districts, as well as the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky urban district.
The ministry stated that a tsunami wave, no higher than 60 centimeters, could potentially reach the Aleutsky district. Smaller waves of up to 40 centimeters and 15 centimeters might impact Ust-Kamchatsky and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, respectively.
Authorities advised residents living in coastal zones to evacuate immediately to areas situated 30 to 40 meters above sea level. In the absence of elevated terrain, they urged people to move at least two to three kilometers inland.
"At present, all medical institutions have been examined, educational and social institutions are being inspected, significant damage has not yet been detected," Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said on Telegram.
